What Is BPM if you know Workflow?

Analysts have recognised that end-to-end visibility and control of high volume, core processes require a combination of workflow (human interaction), orchestration (system interaction), and integration delivered via highly scalable, browser-based Internet technologies. These features constitute a recognised product category, known as "pure play" BPMS.

Some vendors have entered the pure play market by incorporating integration features into their workflow solutions while others have incorporated workflow features into their EAI products. Users find both these approaches are limited by the vendors' historical architectures and product inertia imposed by their installed base of users. Products with workflow heritage suffer from limited scalability and integration while those with an EAI heritage have not achieved advanced workflow features. Neither have achieved the end to end visibility and control features found in Savvion. Document management and rules vendors have faced the greater challenge of incorporating both workflow and EAI into their various specialty feature sets.
